Traveling to Da Nang, Vietnam

It might feel crazy to travel to the other side of the world on a 24 hour trip, however we will help so it's not as daunting 🙂. Below you can find information on what you need to do.

Get a Passport

In order to receive a Vietnam Visa, your Passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months following your arrival date. If you need a new Passport, it currently takes 10-12 weeks to process and you should prioritize applying for one. You can do so here.

Receive Vaccinations

Per the CDC, only one “new” vaccination is strongly recommended: Typhoid (oral or injection). You can usually get these at your local Walgreens/CVS health clinic.

Others to consider: If you think you or your child will be petting wild dogs, please get the Rabies vaccine. If you plan on camping in the more rural parts of Vietnam, then plan on getting the Japanese Encephalitis vaccination.

Book a Flight

Round-trip flights from Los Angeles -> Da Nang will be around $1,000. We recommend booking your flights around 3-6 months in advance. Everyone will have a different flight schedule depending on where you're coming from. If you have any questions, please reach out to Stephen or Erika 😊.

Our recommendation: Fly out of Los Angeles Friday, Feb 17 around midnight. You'll land in Vietnam on Sunday, Feb 19 morning. Experience Vietnam for a week and fly back to the United States on Sunday, Feb 26. You'll actually land back in the US on Sunday, Feb 26 as well this way.

Apply for a Vietnam Visa

About a month before you enter Vietnam, you'll want to apply for a Vietnam E-Visa. This is a simple and quick process that takes about 3 days and costs $25. You can apply here.

Enter Vietnam

When you arrive in Vietnam, you'll simply walk through customs, show your Passport and E-Visa to receive your entrance stamp and walk right in.

Transportation in Vietnam

Once you walk outside the Da Nang International airport, there will be a pre-scheduled driver waiting there for you with a sign showing your name. You and your family can go with the driver to be taken to your hotel. Make sure to message us when you arrive!

While in Vietnam, we'll have dedicated drivers to take you around to all of our scheduled events. You can also use the app Grab to book rides. It's very similar to Uber and Lyft, just better pricing!

Paying in Vietnam

You can use your credit card at the majority of retail establishments. The exception is American Express as most places don't accept that card. We also strongly recommend you exchange your US Dollars for Vietnamese Dong. Credit cards are not accepted at many smaller shops and restaurants and it's good to be prepared. You'll also need Vietnamese Dong when trying to negotiate at the street vendors!

Another tip: You can exchange USD for VND at your hotel or bank. You'll get a better exchange rate if you bring the newer colored $100 bill as Vietnam does not accept the older non-colored bills. Not sure why 🤷

Fun Fact: Erika is afraid of heights and cries on every roller coaster she goes on. Holding hands with Stephen is the only way she’ll go on one 🥲

Are you making a vacation out of your trip?

There is so much to see in and around Da Nang, Vietnam. We want you to make this an incredible vacation for you and your family. If you're planning on staying for a week or longer, you may want to visit a few of the places below.

Chàm Islands

Chàm Islands

A quick 30 minute boat ride off the coast of Hội An will take you to the tropical Chàm Islands. With a population of just under 2,500 people, each of the eight islands has something unique to offer. Give snorkeling or scuba diving a try while discovering the 135 different species of coral. Maybe take a few hours to relax on Bãi Ông Beach while observing the panoramic scenery. You can take a walk looking for the large wild monkey population. There's so much to do!

How to get there: You'll need to board a 30 minute ferry that picks people up in Hội An, specifically at Cua Dai Pier. The ferry leaves between 8:00-8:30 a.m. However, it would be more effective though to book a tour that includes transportation and a few activities while you're on the Island.

Linh Ung Pagoda

Linh Ung Pagoda

If you’d like a more serene or spiritual experience, then Linh Ung Pagoda might be the perfect place for you! This pagoda sits on 50 acres of land in the Sơn Trà mountains, and is absolutely beautiful. “Linh Ung” itself means “wishes answered miraculously” and it is thought that if you pray sincerely inside the pagoda, all your wishes might come true. One of the most important and visible parts of the Linh Ung pagoda is the Lady Buddha statue, which is the tallest one in Vietnam at 220 ft high. Many Buddhists and tourists come to the Buddha for spiritual and cultural admiration.

How to get there: It's easy to visit Linh Ung Pagoda. Just book a 20 minute car ride from Da Nang to take you over there!

Mỹ Sơn

Mỹ Sơn

Mỹ Sơn Sanctuary, recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site, is located just south of Da Nang. This site features over 70 various Hindu temples which were built between the 4th to 14th century by the Chàm Dynasty. The site consists of rock-cut temples and intricately carved shrines. The temples are mainly dedicated to Lord Shiva, and parts of these were destroyed in the American Vietnam war bombings. It is believed to be the center of prayer in the times of the Chàm monarchs. Overlooking a rich jungle of foliage and greenery, this destination is a wonderful combination of natural and man-made beauty.

How to get there: Mỹ Sơn is about an hour south from Da Nang City in a car or bus. We recommend booking a tour that includes round-trip transportation.

Bà Nà Hills Golf Club

Bà Nà Hills Golf Club

At #89 on the World's Top 100 Golf Courses by Golf Digest, Bà Nà Hills Golf Course is routed in the foothills of Vietnam’s impressive Bà Nà mountain range. The layout is a gently rolling, heavily bunkered affair, with waterways of some sort on 13 holes and fairways backdropped by hills of heavy forest. The par 72, 18-hole Championship golf course provides a balance of challenge, enjoyment and excitement to golfers of all levels and abilities with 5 sets of tees to ensure golfers of all standards a pleasurable round of golf. The course is also well lighted for night play.

How to get there: Bà Nà Hills Golf Club is only a 40 minute drive from Da Nang but feels much shorter as you absorb the gorgeous scenery along the way!

Imperial City of Huế

Imperial City of Huế

The Imperial City was a walled fortress and palace that belonged to the ancient city of Huế. This was the capital city of the Nguyễn Dynasty and dates back from 1802 until 1945. The last reigning emperor of Vietnam, Bảo Đại, took throne in 1926 when he was only 13 years old. The Imperial City of Huế is also one of Vietnam’s seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You can easily spend a day walking around admiring the royal tombs, pagodas, temples, royal quarters, library, and museum. The site hosts daily cultural performances at 9:00am, 10:00am, 2:30pm and 3:30 pm.

How to get there: You'll need a full day to experience Huế. The drive alone is 2 hours each way, but it is definitely worth it!

Hạ Long Bay

Hạ Long Bay

For those of you who are looking for a bit more of an adventure, Hạ Long Bay is one of those magical destinations worth visiting. Erika and Stephen will finally be able to travel here during their trip as well 😊. Hạ Long Bay is known for its emerald waters and thousands of towering limestone islands topped by rainforests. Boat tours and sea kayak expeditions take visitors past islands named for their shapes, including Stone Dog and Teapot islets. The region is popular for scuba diving, rock climbing and hiking, particularly in the mountainous Cát Bà National Park.

How to get there: First you'll take a 1h 20m flight from Da Nang to Haiphong, then hop on a 1 hour ferry to Cát Bà Island. Once you're on the island, there will be many options to join a boat tour around Hạ Long Bay. We also recommend staying a night on Cát Bà Island to really experience the activities.

Fun Fact: Both Erika and Stephen's top played Spotify artist the past three years is Taylor Swift 🐍
